For domestic and European travel, Delta’s SkyMiles program is about the worst when it comes to mileage upgrades, because it requires booking an expensive ‘M’ or ‘B’ fare to qualify. However, it isn’t bad for travel to Asia and South America, where much higher Business Class fares are often the rule.
Free ticket award levels are also not bad, especially since Delta upped the number of miles you can buy annually from 30,000 to 50,000. That’s enough for an upgrade to South America. Under the new rules, a SkyMiles member can also receive 50,000 miles as a gift.
