A Convoluted but Cheaper Way to South Africa

Want to test your frequent flyer mettle and get a Business Class deal to South Africa, where such offers are rarer than the white rhino? Stay with me.

Start by joining Air France’s loyalty program Flying Blue (sign up over the phone in five minutes). Then transfer 55,000 miles from your Amex Membership Rewards program, or 45,000 from your Starpoints account, into your new Flying Blue account, which you’ll need for the next move: booking a discount “web award” from Amsterdam to Johannesburg or Cape Town on Air France’s recently acquired KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

That’s a good deal considering there are plenty of ways to get to Amsterdam from the US for around $2,200, or using any number of mileage strategies.

The booking and departure deadline is Feb. 27. This is not the best time to go on safari in South Africa, but when are you going to get back there for such a low price? Cape Town should be hopping, as it will be just coming into fall (you’re south of the equator).

Here is the fine print: Reservations must be made online at www.airfrance.com or klm.com. Caveat: No changes and no refunds.
