The increases (mostly 5,000 to 10,000 miles) pertain mainly to upgrades and Business and First Class awards. Many Anytime Awards (almost always a bad deal) will increase 10,000 to 20,000 miles. Award travel to China increased the most—20,000 for a Business Saver award, 40,000 more for an Anytime Award. There’s also new $150 co-pay for upgrades to some upper South American countries. Considering how airlines like Delta and Qantas make radical changes overnight, this move by American is encouraging. Increases take effect Oct. 21, 2008.
