Just $250, cleverly spent, could get you a Business Class to First Class upgrade on five transatlantic routes round-trip.
The same upgrade you can buy in miles: at a cost of 50,000. Oh, and on top of that, there’s an $1,100 cash surcharge.
However, the fascinatingly low First Class fares we recently discovered achieve the same thing:

Snag one and you have your own custom-made upgrade.
This bizarre Business Class to First Class upgrade—$250 instead of 50,000 miles plus a $1,100 surcharge—is another example of what we call EasyUp Fares.
An EasyUp is the easiest upgrade of all. You achieve it when the class you would like to be upgraded to costs little more than the class you might otherwise book. So why book it?
Why not, in the case of these U.S.-Europe fares, where the difference between First Class and Business Class is suddenly so low, why not buy First Class first up?
The airline is American, this time. The five transatlantic non-stop routes and all the fine print find here.
(Imagine if you booked, say, Miami-Paris Business Class return at $2,244 and then found out First Class was just $2,494. Or worse if you forked out a pile of miles and a surcharge for an upgrade when buying First Class first up was the way to go. Or, even worse, if you flew First Class with Air France at a cost of $6,399.)
