Continental Airlines is forcing its Platinum and Silver elites to take part in the carrier’s continued cost-cutting campaign by reducing bonus miles for travel after March 1, 2009. Platinum members will see their bonus miles drop from 125% to 100% (matching the unchanged bonus for Gold elites); Silvers face a cut from 50% to 25%. The reduction applies to tickets purchased on or after Nov. 15, 2008.
Further changes include:
- SaverPass mileage requirement for Business/First increases 20,000 miles from the US to Tel Aviv (from 100,000 to 120,000), and Hawaii (from 120,000 to 140,000); EasyPass requirement rises 50,000 miles to Tel Aviv (from 250,000 to 300,000), and Hawaii (from 270,000 to 320,000).
- Effective Oct. 7, 2008, non-elite members will be charged $15 to check a bag for travel within the US, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, and to Canada. The rule applies to tickets purchased after Sept. 5.
