Continental’s Mileage Bonus Program

December 2008
Read Offline

It’s called Extra Mile, and it asks you to pay now ($125 or $175) to earn bonus miles later—50% on all Continental flights in 2009, starting on January 1. It can work out to as little as $10 per 1,000 miles. The straight purchase option, by comparison, costs $32 per 1,000 miles and can only be used to purchase up to 25% of the miles needed for an award. Extra Mile also has an earning cap depending on the fee paid: 12,500 ($125 fee) and 17,500 ($175 fee). Note that the cost-per-mile figure is based on earning the maximum number of miles: 12,500 for flying 25,000 miles, and 17,500 for flying 35,000 miles. If you fly less than that, the cost per mile goes up. Enrollment deadline: Jan. 31, 2009. To enroll call (800) 554-5522.

If you need Continental miles but aren’t traveling a lot next year, keep Amex Membership Rewards in mind for buying Continental miles via transfer option.
