The Seat

United’s best international Business Class seat—a 77- inch-long, 23.5-inch-wide flatbed—is on its B767-300, which also covers domestic routes between Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. The next best option on those routes is United’s B777, which offers a 20.5-inch wide seat with a 55-inch pitch.

Return on Miles

On the Washington, DC-Denver route, United uses the B767. This route offers a great return on miles. Fares are usually high—a Business Class ticket easily costs $2,642 (plus taxes). United charges 50,000 miles for that ticket, which equals 5.3¢ per mile. We surveyed the route over the next 11 months and found availability plentiful in both directions December through November 2010.

Getting Miles

United allows you to purchase up to 60,000 miles per year. Or get United’s Mileage Plus Visa credit card and after spending just $250 you earn 30,000 miles.
