Europe Summer Fare Watch

July 2007

Since last month’s feature on the topic, two new fares have cropped up on British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. They’re noteworthy because both carriers offer (horizontally) lie-flat seats in Business Class. Fares start at $2,122 round-trip from New York, the only gateway on sale at this time. Children 2 to 12 get a extraordinary 20% discount; there’s a 30-day advance purchase requirement, and a Sunday minimum stay. Travel window: July 1 through Aug. 31. Ticketing deadline: Aug. 1.

Just In: Eos is offering round-trip fares as low as $1,688. Tickets must be purchased by Aug. 4, for travel through Sept. 2. And British Airways just launched a Business Class fare sale—matched by Virgin—from most of its US gateways, starting at $1,858 round-trip from New York (I can’t remember seeing a BA fare this low!), $2,456 from Chicago, and $2,636 from Los Angeles. The ticketing deadline is July 8 (although it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s extended).

Remember: With only 50,000 miles you can upgrade these flights to BA’s opulent First Class—otherwise pricing at $14,000 to $18,000. Don’t have the miles? You can buy them straight from BA and “pool,” buy/transfer from Starwood, or transfer from your Diners Club account.
