Insanely cheap Business Class fares to Japan!
I travel from NYC to Tokyo at least three times per year and have been accustomed to getting Business Class for $5K to $8K on my favorite carrier, ANA. (US carriers tend to be a bit cheaper, but offer much less of everything else.)
Last night I happened to check fares for peak summer and Christmas seasons and—I couldn’t believe my eyes—the current round-trip fares are $2,550 during the week and $2,995 if the trip includes a weekend. These fares are inclusive of all surcharges and taxes. INSANE. I verified the fare on ITASOFTWARE, and it looks like every carrier flying the route has matched these fares.
I had already booked two NY-Tokyo round-trips this year using miles (85,000 plus $600-$750 in taxes). After seeing these fares, I cancelled the tickets, redeposited the miles (6,000-mile fee in all), and rebooked the same itineraries at $2,550 per trip. Mind you, I got back the taxes ($1,350), too.
I don’t know what’s going on, but I haven’t seen such low fares in 10 to 15 years. FYI, fares to China on ANA have not dropped (Business Class = $6,500+). But just book ANA to Tokyo and make a separate reservation to other points in Asia.

My wife and I joined the US Airways loyalty program based on FCF’s advice, even though we live in Minneapolis, a Delta hub. We took your advice and went for the US Airways mileage buying promo, and landed Business Class tickets on United, a Star Alliance partner of US Air, from MSP-Sydney through SFO for 105,000 miles or $1,995. I haven’t found anyone able to top this! Thanks.
