Many of you know that on most North America and Hawaii routes, the seats up front are only slightly better, and (believe it or not) often even less comfortable, than some Premium Economy seats on international flights. Here’s the truth: There are seats, and then there are seats.
And right now, thanks to the lockdown’s causing airlines to pull their premium aircraft off international routes, there’s a new “wing” (the collective noun for aircraft) of domestic flights that are offering those plush international seats.
So for travelers looking to hit the skies in comfort, the trick is to know which flights are offering them.
Sweet Seats
All routes are not created equal. Take American’s Phoenix-Maui route, which flies on both A321s and B777s. The fares are exactly the same, but the seats are not. Business Class on the B777s recline to 180 degrees, but the A321s only recline a few inches. Or take United’s Chicago-Denver route, which flies on both B737s and B777s, with the same fares. The Business Class on B777s recline to 180 degrees, but the B737s only recline a few inches. That’s a big difference in comfort for no difference in price. Ifs and Buts. How to Get a Free In-Class Seat Upgrade
Your odds of getting an international Business Class seat are 100% on American’s Los Angeles- and Las Vegas-to-Miami; Charlotte-, Chicago-, and Dallas-to-Honolulu; and Dallas-to-Kona and Maui routes. That’s because they only feature the better seats. Your odds of getting an international Business Class seat from Phoenix to Honolulu or Maui are 50%.
On United, the chances of getting an international Business Class seat on a domestic flight aren’t so great, although they are on the Transcon and Washington, DC-San Francisco route, along with a bunch of others to Hawaii, including Chicago to Honolulu, Kona, and Maui; Denver to Kauai, Kona, and Maui; Houston, Newark, and Washington, DC, to Honolulu; and Newark to Maui.
Your odds of getting an international Business Class seat on Delta are 100% on the Atlanta – San Diego and Portland routes. Las Vegas to Atlanta six out of seven flights have international aircraft. Atlanta – New York has 22 flights but only one has an international aircraft. Of six routes to Hawaii, five have the international aircraft, Los Angeles to Honolulu your odds are 25% while Atlanta, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and Seattle your odds are 100%.
Know Your Seat Numbers
For North America and Hawaii, if you know American’s 23, Delta’s 41, and United’s 32 flights that use an international aircraft with those comfortable international Business/First Class seats, you’ll have a simple way to get an in-class seat upgrade. That’s right, a significant seat upgrade by simply knowing where to find them.
