Listen up, golf lovers. Here’s an alert from David Baum, publisher of Golf Odyssey, about a way to save about $800 on a tee time at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland. Yeah, FCF isn’t about golf; it’s about an upgrade mindset. This little piece nails it to a tee.

On Sept. 5, the St. Andrews Links Trust, which manages the Old Course, begins taking advance reservations for 2013. They go fast. If you get a tee time, it will cost you about $245. If you miss the deadline, you’ll probably end up book-ing through a golf travel company, which will charge you around $1,000.

Application forms are posted on the St. Andrews Links Trust website. Return them by e-mail to reservations@standrews.org.uk. If you send in your applica-tion early or to a different address, it will be rejected.

Keep the following in mind when selecting a date:

  • The Old Course is closed on Sundays.
  • August is extremely busy so your chances.
  • There are no advance reservations for September, when play is only available via the daily tee-time lottery.
  • Read the section called “busy dates,” a list of days on which the course is not open for public play. Applications asking for these dates are simply discarded.
  • Submit a range of dates to increase your chances.
