International Seat Beat: How to Get United’s Best International Seats

January 2010

Right now, United is showing signs of a split personality when it comes to First and Business Class seats on international routes. Personality One: A new First Class suite and a lie-flat bed in Business Class, is to be found on the carrier’s B747s (to be completed Jan. 2010) and 767s. Personality Two: (the harsh one) Is found on the B777s in Business Class, with a 20.5-inch-wide seat that only reclines to 147 degrees, and in First Class, the old version of a First Class seat (not the worst, but not five-star either). The 777s are scheduled to get the carrier’s new First and Business Class seats over the next year or so.

Why You Need to Know This

Fly United’s 9:46 a.m. Washington, DC-London flight, served by a B767, and you’ll be sitting pretty in the new Business Class seat. Pay the same fare for the 5:48 p.m. flight, a B777, and you’ll be in the old-style recliner seat.

The comfort you’ll experience is as different as night and day.

Consult the chart below to find which flight to avoid when connecting in San Francisco to Tokyo and Frankfurt, and from Washington, DC to Frankfurt and London. It will keep you from getting the least for your money.

For all of you who live in between and can make a connection on any of the options, use this information to get the most for your money.
