Oneworld Alternatives to American

We have gold status with American but it doesn’t do us much good when we try to book award or upgrade seats from LAX to JFK—or other destinations from LaGuardia and Newark. What other oneworld carriers accept AAdvantage miles?

I’m afraid you’re stuck. American is the only U.S. domestic airline in the oneworld alliance. It does have two smaller partners, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian, which are not oneworld members, and they’re probably of limited use. Alaska Airlines flights would involve a connection in Seattle, and Hawaiian will only get you to Hawaii. Your long term solution is to get to Platinum elite status or become a member of Amex Membership Rewards, which gives you access to two other alliances: SkyTeam (Delta and partners) and Star (US Airways and partners) for point redemption. Or request an elite status match with another airline, such as United (see FCF, May 2010).— MB
