A number of you have asked, “What should I do now that United’s 2-for-1 program has been dissolved?” I suggest that you turn to American Express’ partnerships with Star Alliance members.

Europe: Ameniti was valid for travel on both United and Lufthansa. The latter is a member of Amex’s Platinum 2-for-1 program, as are fellow Star Alliance partners: Austrian Air and SAS. SWISS, a new Star Alliance Partner, is also an Amex 2-for-1 member, and offers both Business and First Class seats to Europe.

Africa and Middle East: Amex’s Austrian Airways, SAS, SWISS, and Lufthansa pick up the slack here, too.

South Pacific: Air New Zealand, a United Mileage Plus Partner, offers 2-for-1 Business Class fares to New Zealand and Australia. (And its seats are much better than United’s.)

Asia: Star Alliance partner Asiana offers a 2-for-1 with Amex; partner Thai Airways offers it directly on its website.

South Africa: South African Airways offers a 2-for-1 via Amex, although it’s not a great deal. The airline’s seats are nice enough to justify the expense for many.
