New Business Class Fare War to Europe From Northeast

July 2006

The lowest fares to Europe usually require a 50-day advance purchase and start around $2,000+. Book only 49 days in advance and you can pay 300%+ more. So when I found new fares in the $2,500 to $3,000 range, requiring only a 10-day advance purchase, they really caught my eye. I don’t ever recall seeing such fares.

The fares—available from the Northeast only—were launched by Delta and have been matched by American, KLM, Lufthansa, Northwest, United and US Airways. It seems as if the fares are an effort to promote Delta’s new service to JFK, and its new routes to Europe, at the same time.

Fares aren’t available from New York City, but only from second-tier cities such as Albany, Buffalo, Burlington, Hartford, Manchester, NH, Portland, ME, Providence, Rochester, and Syracuse. Destinations include Amsterdam, Athens, Brussels, Budapest, Istanbul, Kiev, Madrid, Milan, Moscow, Rome, and Venice.

Fine print: There’s a lot, based on routing. Plus, ticketing and travel deadlines are all over the map. Some of the restrictions relate to Delta’s starting service to NYC/JFK from the cities listed above. Albany and Syracuse to JFK service begins Aug. 1; Burlington to JFK begins July 5; Hartford and Providence to JFK on Aug. 15; and Manchester and Portland Sept. 15, 2006. Check with Delta for more details: (800) 241-4141 or Delta.com.
