The carrier is charging $25 for domestic WorldPerks award tickets issued in North America on or after Sept. 15, $50 for trans-Atlantic tickets, and $100 for trans-Pacific ones.

NWA notes, “This is a temporary fee to partially offset our fuel costs.” How often have we seen an airline reverse fees? Once passengers get used to paying a service fee, we will sooner see the fees increase than be eliminated.

Northwest is also imposing a checked-bag fee of $15 on tickets sold after July 10 for domestic and Canada travel starting Aug. 28. The fee for a second checked bag is $25, and $100 for three or more checked bags. Frequent-flyer elites are exempt, along with full-fare coach passengers.

The fee for domestic non-refundable ticket changes will increase from $100 to $150. International ticket change fees will increase by $50 to $150 per ticket, depending on class of service and other restrictions.
