The carrier is guaranteeing Platinum Elite members First Class upgrades on domestic flights in 2008, but is also offering 1,000 miles as compensation if it doesn’t deliver. Offer is valid on flights operated by Northwest Airlines, Compass Airlines, and Mesaba Airlines with a First Class cabin.

Platinum members must be on a paid domestic itinerary, which means flights between the US 48, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Valid fares are Y, B, M, H, Q, V, L, T, and K. The 1,000-mile consolation prize does not count toward elite status. Promotion ends Feb. 28, 2009.

Alaska Airlines is offering Northwest members a similar deal but makes the process much more straightforward. The offer is open to Platinum Elite or Gold Elite members on a space available basis on Alaska Airlines-operated flights. Present your Platinum Elite or Gold elite card at the check-in counter or gate and ask to be placed on the First Class upgrade wait list. When traveling on full-fare, contact Alaska Airlines reservations at (800) 654-5669 and request a First Class upgrade using an electronic upgrade certificate.
