The challenge facing the new, all-Business Class carriers is breaking the business traveler’s addiction to earning mileage in pursuit of elite status on his preferred carrier. Why start over with a new airline, no matter how good the seats and service, many say? It may not even be around in a year, whereas it’s clear that American and United are not going away.

Silverjet, the all-Business Class carrier to London, thinks it has found a way—by replacing “frequent” with “freequent.” It is offering anyone with an elite frequent flyer membership on any carrier a free London–Newark/New York ticket in return for buying a paid, one-way Newark-London ticket ($899). There is no limit to the number of bookings, but they must be made by midnight, May 25.
To qualify, Newark-London passengers must log on to www.flysilverjet.com/freequent and divulge their frequent flyer program. Silverjet then emails a promotion code and booking instructions for the free ticket. The airline flies 100-seat B767s from Newark to London’s Luton Airport, about 45 minutes north of London. Seats recline to 170 degrees, are 6’3” long at full recline. They have personal, digital, in-flight entertainment systems and noise reduction headsets as well.
Other benefits of defecting include enjoying the private terminal at Luton airport and private lounge at Newark Terminal B. Both feature concierge service, baggage drop, snacks, a fully stocked bar and WiFi service. The airline also provides a 30-minute check-in (45 with baggage), done chair-side at the lounge and Fast Track through security.
