Call Northwest for a quote on First Class from Los Angeles to Honolulu and you’ll be told the fare is $1,913 round-trip. Call Northwest WorldVacations, the carrier’s packaged-vacations division, and you’ll be quoted $715 round-trip (63% less)—what economy class can cost at times.
The Catch: Depending on the destination and departure city, these packages require a three- or five-day car rental (as little as $90) or a two-night hotel stay. (Most travelers need one or the other anyway.) First Class is also discounted on inter-island hops to Lihue, Maui, and Kona. Fares are usually better from the West Coast, where, coincidently, First Class fares to Hawaii can be higher (for half the flight distance) than the East Coast.
Flying from the midwest or east? If you want to fly First Class, consider departing from the “North Star State,” otherwise known as Minnesota, home of Northwest Airlines.
Northwest is using a new internationally configured A330 on its Minneapolis-Honolulu route (one flight daily). This is arguably the best airline seat to Hawaii, with the most room and comfort in First Class.
Part of a Northwest fleet upgrade, the A330’s premium seats recline 176 degrees, and they aren’t considered the best airline seat based on creature comfort alone. These have a personal audio/video entertainment system offering 40 movies, 4 short-subject video programs, 56 different audio selections, 6 games and in-flight information, all available “on demand.”
