If you haven’t done so yet, now is the time to go for your loyalty program’s purchase limit. That’s because every domestic airline but one bases the limit on the calendar year (see chart below). Buy the limit now and buy the limit next year with a new promotion and you can end up with enough miles for a major upgrade.
Those who are able to “expense” many of their flights will find that year-end purchases can be interesting when the net cost is figured in.
Mileage-Purchase Sale Example: Buy 60,000 American miles now, netting 78,000 miles through the year-end buying promo, and you’ll have enough for a First Class award ticket from New York to Hawaii, for only $1,809, a ticket that otherwise costs $3,097+, a savings of $1,288 (42%). Other uses for the miles include one and a half upgrades to Asia or Europe, or two domestic upgrades.
