Along with the elite-share announcement, United changed its position on the elimination of “Regional Upgrades” for its 1K members. In their words:

What separates the Regional Upgrade from the forthcoming unlimited free upgrades is that it covers the transcon routes from Los Angeles and San Francisco to New York, which won’t be offered when the new program takes effect, and even more important: You can have a confirmed guaranteed in advance. We congratulate those 1Ks who raised their voices in protest.
