The carrier is selling elite status for a 90-day period and then letting you keep it through Feb. 28, 2009, if you fly a certain number of miles during that period. The tables below show the requirements.

My Take: This promotion will get some newbie’s into the upgrade game, but it dilutes the value of existing members’ elite status by lengthening the line for ever-fewer upgrades. I’d say go for Platinum status. You might as well get to the head of the line and the price is right—if you’ve got 22,000 miles of travel ahead of you.
Fine print: One enrollment permitted in any consecutive 24-month period. Only elite qualifying flights and bonuses earned on flights operated by US Airways, US Airways Express, America West and America West Express apply toward the Trial Preferred Program. The participation fee is non-refundable.
